The people's king: How "The King's Warden" became Korea's biggest film in years
In 1984, a Korean television drama called "Apricot in the Snow" aired what can only be described as a creative betrayal of the historical record. Its subject was an incident known to Koreans as Gyeyujeongnan, or the Purge of the Gyeyu Year — a 1453 coup in which Grand Prince Suyang seized control of the court, deposed his twelve-year-old nephew Danjong, banished him to a remote mountain village, and eventually had him killed. In the TV drama's telling, Suyang was a hero born out of circumstance.

'The King's Warden' boosts Korea's film revival push
The culture minister delivered cake and flowers to the director in person. The head of the national heritage agency posted guides on social media to the film's real-life locations. The president put up his own congratulations on X. "The King's Warden" had already broken records before any of that happened, but the wave of official recognition that followed the film's run has been remarkable in its own right. The film crossed 10 million admissions on Friday, 31 days after its Feb. 4 opening. In K

From boot camp to barracks, this is what BTS got up to in the military
With "Arirang" dropping on March 20 and a world tour close behind, BTS' return is sure to be the K-pop event of 2026. But before hitting the stadiums, all seven bandmates spent the better part of two years fulfilling their mandatory military service, a requirement for every able-bodied Korean man. The album title carries more weight than most headlines have conveyed. "Arirang" is one of Korea's oldest folk songs, tied for centuries to themes of separation, longing and reunion. And apparently, th

What 'King's Warden' gets right — and invents — about Korea's most tragic king
Director Jang Hang-jun's "The King's Warden" has steamrolled through the Korean box office since its Feb. 4 release and has now surpassed the 10 million admission threshold — one only a handful of Korean films clear. It is a remarkable run for a period drama built around a tragedy every Korean already knows: Danjong, the boy king who ascended the throne at 12, was ousted by his uncle at 15 and died in mountain exile by 17. It is the kind of tragedy that never quite lets go. The film centers on t

'No Other Choice' just crossed $10m in the US. But it's not nearly Korea's top-grossing film there
Park Chan-wook's "No Other Choice" has crossed the $10 million mark in the North American box office, pushing his career record in the region even further ahead, the film's South Korean distributor CJ ENM said Tuesday. The black comedy about a laid-off paper mill worker who goes after his rival job applicants passed $10 million in takeings on Feb. 28, according to CJ ENM. The film opened with a limited release on Christmas Day, before expanding to 695 theaters on Jan. 16. Neon, which acquired No

‘The King’s Warden‘ is nearing 10 million ticket sales. Here’s why that number matters.
When "The King's Warden" opened on Feb. 4, a full week ahead of the Lunar New Year window, many in the industry read the timing as a kind of concession. Ryoo Seung-wan's 23.5 billion won ($16 million) spy thriller "Humint," due a week later, was positioned as the season's main event; opening early looked like a move to grab whatever audience was available before the bigger film landed. Four weeks on, "The King's Warden" has drawn 8.48 million admissions, becoming one of Korean cinema's unlikelie
