Hong Ihk-pyo, senior presidential secretary for political affairs, said in a press briefing that Lee had “carefully reviewed the confirmation hearing and the public evaluation that followed.”

She submitted inaccurate information on her eldest son’s marital status to qualify to buy a high-priced apartment in Seoul. Her family listed the son as an unmarried dependent living together, to increase the family's score, though he was married and owned a home near his workplace in Sejong. This was an explanation that was difficult to accept by common sense. If this is true, it amounts to a crime.
고가의 서울 아파트 구입 자격을 얻기 위해 이 전 후보는 장남의 결혼여부에 대해 허위 정보를 제출했다. 청약 점수를 높이기 위해 이미 결혼해 세종시 직장 근처에서 집을 소유하고 있는 장남을 동거중인 미혼 부양 가족으로 기재했다. 이는 상식으로 받아들이기 어려운 해명이다. 만약 사실이라면 범죄에 해당하는 것이다.
Facing allegations of preferential admission at Yonsei University involving her eldest son, she initially said he had been admitted under a program for families with multiple children, then changed her explanation to assert he qualified as a beneficiary of a “national merit” category tied to a medal conferred on her father-in-law, Kim Tae-ho, a former interior minister. The claim drew criticism as a so-called “grandfather advantage.”
장남의 연세대 특례 입학 의혹에 대해서는 당초 다자녀 가족 전형으로 입학했다고 했다가 말을 바꿔 전 시아버지인 김태호 전 내무장관이 받았던 "국가 보훈" 전형의 수혜자에 해당되었다고 주장하며 소명 내용을 변경했다. 이 주장은 소위 "할아버지 찬스"라는 비난을 불러일으켰다.
The confirmation process clarified, rather than dispelled, the grounds for her disqualification. Given further allegations of abusive conduct, such as shocking verbal attacks on her aides when she was a lawmaker, it was doubtful that she could properly carry out public duties even if appointed minister. Under the circumstances, the withdrawal of the nomination was inevitable.
청문회를 통해 이 전 후보의 부적격 사유는 해명되기는커녕 되려 분명해졌다. 국회의원 재직시 보좌진에 대한 충격적인 폭언 등 추가적인 갑질 의혹을 고려할 때 장관으로 임명된다고 해도 제대로 공직을 수행할 수 있을지 의문이다. 이러한 상황에서 지명 철회는 불가피했다.
From the outset, she should have more carefully weighed whether to accept the nomination. No one would have known her past better than she did. Moreover, it meant serving in a camp that holds a different political ideology. The People Power Party expelled her following her acceptance of the nomination. Above all, as allegations piled up, she should have apologized and voluntarily stepped aside before the opening of the confirmation hearing.
애초에 이 전 후보는 지명을 수락할지 좀더 신중하게 고민했어야 한다. 자신의 과거는 스스로가 가장 잘 알고 있다. 게다가 정치적 이념이 다른 진영에서 장관직을 수행할 것이었다. 국힘은 지명 수락 후 이 전 후보를 제명시켰다. 무엇보다 의혹이 쌓여갔을 때 사과를 하고 청문회가 열리기 전 자진 사퇴했어야 한다.
This is the third ministerial nomination to collapse under the Lee government. Kang Sun-woo, the nominee for Minister of Gender Equality and Family, resigned voluntarily as allegations mounted over her abusive treatment of aides during her time as a lawmaker and claims that she attempted to slash the ministry’s budget in an apparent retaliation for unfulfilled constituency demands. Lee Jin-sook, the nominee for Minister of Education, saw her nomination withdrawn over allegations of plagiarism and misappropriation of academic work, as well as her child's illegal early study abroad.

As nominations for high-ranking officials have repeatedly collapsed over issues of integrity and competence, Cheong Wa Dae’s vetting system has come under sharp criticism. One cannot but ask why issues with potential legal violations were not filtered out in advance. Some of the reasons for withdrawing Lee Hye-hoon's nomination were also matters that could have been adequately identified in advance.
고위공직자 인선이 도덕성과 능력 문제로 연이어 실패하자 청와대의 검증 체계가 강도 높은 비판을 받고 있다. 법 위반 가능성이 있는 문제들이 왜 사전에 걸러지지 않았는지 묻지 않을 수 없다. 이 전 후보의 지명 철회 이유 중 일부는 사전에 충분히 발견할 수 있는 문제들이었다.
Nominating a figure who turned out to be a “department store of irregularities,” then maintaining the nomination until it was finally withdrawn, indicates that Cheong Wa Dae either lacked the capacity for proper vetting or deliberately pushed ahead for political reasons, despite being aware of the allegations.
"의혹 백화점"으로 드러난 인사를 지명하고 결국 철회할 때까지 후보로 유지한 것은 청와대가 제대로 된 사전 검증 능력을 갖추지 못했거나 문제를 인지했음에도 불구하고 정치적인 이유로 의도적으로 밀어붙였다는 것을 뜻한다.
